Help & FAQ

Common questions about using ChapterSwaps.

Getting Started

How does ChapterSwaps work?

List books you've finished reading, browse books shared by other readers, and request the ones you'd like. Once accepted, the sender gets a prepaid QR code to show at the drop-off point — no cost to either party beyond the small shipping fee paid at checkout.

Is it free to use?

Creating an account and listing books is completely free. The only cost is a small shipping fee (paid by the requester) when you request a book, which covers postage and a £0.30 service fee.

How do I add a book?

Go to "Add Book" in the navigation. You can scan the barcode with your phone camera, type in the ISBN, or enter the details manually. We'll try to auto-fill the title, author, and cover image for you.

Swapping

How do I request a book?

Find a book you'd like on the Browse page, click it, and add it to your basket. At checkout you'll choose a shipping option and pay the postage. The owner will then accept or decline your request.

What happens once the book arrives?

Confirm you received it from your Library, and tell us what condition it arrived in. If you don't, the swap completes on its own 3 days after the carrier marks it delivered — so check in if something's wrong before then.

What happens after my request is accepted?

Prepaid postage is generated automatically. The sender gets a QR code, packs the book, and shows the code at a Post Office or ParcelShop — the staff print the label there, so no printer needed. You'll get email updates as the parcel moves through the system.

How long do I have to respond to a request?

You have 7 days to accept or decline. After that, the request expires automatically and the requester is refunded.

Can I cancel a request?

Yes — you can cancel from your Library page any time before postage is bought, including after the owner has accepted. Once the QR code has been generated the postage is paid for, so cancelling isn't possible — raise a dispute instead.

Do I get my book back afterwards?

No — a swap is permanent, not a loan. Once you've accepted a request and posted the book, it belongs to the person who received it. They can keep it, list it again, or pass it on. Only list books you're genuinely happy to part with, and never list borrowed or library books.

Shipping

How does shipping work?

We use SendCloud to generate prepaid postage through Royal Mail and Evri. The sender shows a QR code at the drop-off point and the carrier prints the label — no printer needed, and nothing to weigh or measure.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping costs vary by carrier and book size, from around £2.99 for a large letter to £7.89 for a heavy parcel, including the service fee. You'll see the exact price at checkout before you commit.

What if my book doesn't arrive?

Raise a dispute from your Library and we'll look at the tracking. We aim to reply within 3 working days, and if it isn't resolved within 14 days your postage is refunded automatically. Please note we can only refund what you paid for postage — we can't replace or compensate for the book itself, because no money changes hands for the book in a swap.

What if the book arrives damaged?

When you confirm receipt you can report the condition on arrival. If it's significantly different from what was listed, raise a dispute from your Library within 14 days and we'll look into it. As with lost parcels, the most we can refund is the postage you paid.

How do disputes work?

Only the person who requested the book can raise a dispute, since they're the one who paid the postage. You'll find the option in your Library on any active or recently completed swap, up to 14 days after it completes. We aim to respond within 3 working days. If we haven't resolved it within 14 days, it closes automatically and your postage is refunded.

When am I refunded automatically?

Postage is refunded without you having to ask if: the owner doesn't respond within 7 days, the owner declines your request, the swap is cancelled before postage is bought, or the carrier never delivers the parcel after 21 days. If there's been no delivery scan after 10 days we'll tell you both and start chasing it. Refunds return to your original payment method within 5–10 working days.

Account & Trust

What is a trust score?

Your trust score reflects how reliable you are as a swapper — it's based on completed swaps, response rate, and whether you ship on time. Higher scores help other readers feel confident swapping with you.

Can I delete my account?

Yes. Contact us and we'll remove your account and personal data within 30 days, in line with UK GDPR.

How do I change my shipping address?

Go to Settings from your profile. Your address is stored securely and never shown to other users — it's only used to generate shipping labels.
